St. Catharines is the largest city in Canada’s Niagara Region and the province of Ontario’s sixth largest urban area. It is the Welland Canal’s northern entrance. The Greater Golden Horseshoe Growth Plan has designated it as an Urban Growth Centre, with the goal of achieving a minimum density target of 150 jobs and residents per hectare by 2032 or earlier.
The city is about 20 kilometres from the US-Canada border. Its economy is influenced by the millions of tonnes of cargo shipped through the Welland Canal, and the canal’s locks are a tourist attraction in and of themselves. General Motors’ transmission plant was located in St. Catharines.
