The Canadian capital of Ottawa, Ontario, the neighbouring city of Gatineau, Quebec, and nearby suburban and exurban communities are collectively referred to as the National Capital Region, also known as Canada’s Capital Region and Ottawa-Gatineau. Although the official boundaries of the NCR do not match the statistical metropolitan area, the term “National Capital Region” is frequently used to refer to the Ottawa-Gatineau metropolitan area.

The National Capital Region is not a unique political or administrative entity, unlike capital districts in some other federal nations. The only CMA in the country that is located in two provinces is Ottawa-Gatineau.

The cities of Ottawa and Gatineau are located on either side of the Ottawa River; Ottawa is in the province of Ontario and speaks English, while Gatineau is in the province of Quebec and speaks French. Together, they make up a metropolitan area with a population of over 1 million. In addition to language, Ottawa differs from its sister city in that it has served as Canada’s capital since 1867.

Government has long been the primary industry in Ottawa, as it is in other national capitals. The current workforce in Ottawa-Gatineau is made up of 13% of workers from the federal government. However, a strong government cluster has also drawn companies that depend on government spending and policy decisions, much like the capital region of other countries. The region is home to Canada’s once-state-owned telecommunications sector, and businesses in the defence, security, software, and life sciences sectors have found it to be a worthwhile location for their offices and research facilities. Even after the technology bust at the turn of the last century, the more than 1,800 high-tech businesses in the region currently employ 11% of the labour force.

Ottawa-Gatineau is not only prosperous and vibrant but also a pleasant place to live. It has the lowest cost of living of any significant North American city and is situated in a stunning natural setting at the confluence of three rivers. A cross-Canada survey named the area the best place to live and work in the country, and the Swiss company, Corporate Resources Group, ranked the area sixth in the world for quality of life.
