Montreal is Canada’s second-most populous city and the capital of the Canadian province of Quebec. It was founded in 1642 as Ville-Marie, or “City of Mary,” and is named after Mount Royal, a triple-peaked hill that surrounded the early city of Ville-Marie. The city is centred on the Island of Montreal, which shares the same name as the city. The city is located 196 kilometres (122 miles) east of Ottawa and 258 kilometres (160 miles) southwest of Quebec City, the provincial capital.

As of 2021, the city had a population of 1,762,949 people and a metropolitan population of 4,291,732, making it Canada’s second-largest city and metropolitan area. The official language of the city is French. Montreal is among the most bilingual cities in Quebec and Canada, with 58.5% of the population speaking both English and French.

In terms of population and economic power, Toronto overtook Montreal’s historical position as commercial capital in the 1970s. It is still a major center for business, aerospace, transportation, finance, pharmaceuticals, technology, education, art, culture, tourism, food, design, fashion, video game development, film, and world affairs. Montreal is home to the International Civil Aviation Organization’s headquarters and was designated a UNESCO City of Design in 2006. The Economist Intelligence Unit ranked Montreal as the 12th most liveable city in the world in its annual Global Liveability Ranking in 2017. However, the COVID-19 pandemic’s strain on the healthcare system caused it to fall to 40 in the 2021 index.

Montreal has hosted a number of international conferences and events, including the International and Universal Exposition in 1967 and the Summer Olympics in 1976. It is the only city in Canada to have hosted the Summer Olympics. Montreal was named a global city in 2018.
