The Canadian city of Kelowna is located on Okanagan Lake in the southern interior of British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley. It serves as the Regional District of Central Okanagan’s administrative centre. The Okanagan word kiláwna, which describes a male grizzly bear, is where the name Kelowna originates.
The largest city in the Interior, Kelowna is also the third-largest metropolitan area in the province (behind Victoria and Vancouver).
In Kelowna, the largest city in the tourist-friendly Okanagan Valley, the service sector employs the largest number of people. In addition to skiing and snowboarding at the nearby Big White and Silver Star ski resorts, other popular summer activities include boating, golf, hiking, and biking. As of 2016, the Greater Kelowna Area’s tourism industry now generates $1 billion annually.
Wines from Kelowna have gained recognition on a global scale. Around and south of the city, where the climate is perfect for the numerous wineries, vineyards are widespread. Sun-Rype, a well-known producer of fruit bars and juices, is based in Kelowna. The two main institutions for post-secondary education are Okanagan College and University of British Columbia.
