Halifax is the largest municipality in Atlantic Canada and the capital of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. The municipal population was 439,819 as of the 2021 Census, with 348,634 living in its urban area. The regional municipality is made up of Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, and Halifax County, four former municipalities that merged in 1996.

With a high concentration of public and private sector businesses, Halifax is a significant economic hub in Atlantic Canada. The Department of National Defence, Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia Health Authority, Saint Mary’s University, the Halifax Shipyard, various levels of government, and the Port of Halifax are significant employers and economic drivers. Due to the Gulf Stream’s moderating effects, Halifax has a humid continental climate (Köppen Dfb) that borders an oceanic climate (Cfb), with warm summers and relatively mild winters. The weather is typically milder in the winter or cooler in the summer than regions at similar latitudes inland, and the temperature generally stays between about 8 and 24 °C (18 and 75 °F) (with a few notable exceptions).
The tourism sector in Halifax promotes the people, places, and coastline of Nova Scotia. In Halifax’s downtown, there are a number of museums and art galleries. Halifax is home to a number of parks, lakes, and beaches for recreational purposes. Numerous facilities offer a variety of intramural sports that are organized for the community.
