Calgary, which has the largest metropolitan area among the three Prairie Provinces, is also the capital of the western Canadian province of Alberta. The city proper had 1,306,784 residents as of 2021, and the metropolitan area had 1,481,806, making it Canada’s third-largest city and fifth-largest metropolitan area.

Calgary is situated in the southern region of the province at the meeting point of the Bow and Elbow rivers, in the area that separates the Canadian Prairies from the Rocky Mountain Foothills, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) east of the Canadian Rockies’ front ranges, about 299 kilometres (186 miles) south of Edmonton, and about 150 kilometres (240 km) north of the US border.
