Regina , Saskatchewan
The capital of the Canadian province of Saskatchewan is Regina. After Saskatoon, it is the second-largest city in the province and the commercial hub of southern Saskatchewan. Regina City Council is in charge of running it. The Sherwood No. 159 Rural Municipality encircles the city.
In contrast to other planned cities in the Canadian West, Regina has few topographical features on its treeless flat plain aside from the tiny spring run-off, Wascana Creek. Early city planners made use of this opportunity by damming the creek to create a decorative lake to the south of the central business district, with a dam a block and a half west of the later elaborate 260 m (850 ft) long Albert Street Bridge crossing the new lake. When Saskatchewan, a new province, chose Regina as its capital in 1906, Regina’s significance was further cemented. The Provincial Legislative Building, both campuses of the University of Regina, First Nations University of Canada, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum, the Regina Conservatory (in the original Regina College buildings), the Saskatchewan Science Centre, the MacKenzie Art Gallery, and the Saskatchewan Centre of the Arts are all located in Regina’s Wascana Centre, which was built around Wascana Lake as its focal point.
The agricultural and mineral resources of Saskatchewan have recently become more in demand, and the province has begun a new phase of rapid economic expansion.
The economies of potash, kaolin, sodium sulphite, bentonite, oil and natural gas, and the surrounding area, all play a significant role. The first impetus for economic growth and significant population settlement was created by the opening of new grain markets in the United Kingdom in 1885, the completion of the train link between eastern Canada and the then-District of Assiniboia, and the development of the high-yielding and early-maturing Marquis strain of wheat. Still a sizable portion of the economy is related to farming and agriculture.
