Oshawa, which will have a population of 175,383 in 2021, is a Canadian city located on the shore of Lake Ontario. It is located in Southern Ontario, about 60 kilometres (37 miles) east of Toronto. It is frequently thought of as the Golden Horseshoe’s and the Greater Toronto Area’s eastern anchor. The Regional Municipality of Durham’s largest municipality is this one. The Ojibwa word aazhawe, which means “the crossing place” or simply “a cross,” is the source of the name Oshawa.

The city is home to the headquarters of General Motors of Canada, which was established in 1876 by Robert McLaughlin as the McLaughlin Carriage Company and later changed its name to McLaughlin Motors Ltd. Oshawa’s previous slogans, “The City that Motovates Canada,” and “The City in Motion,” were both inspired by the automobile industry. The city is home to Parkwood Estate, the opulent residence of the founder of the automobile company and a National Historic Site of Canada.

Despite the fact that General Motors continues to play a significant role in the city’s economy, Oshawa, once known as the sole “Automotive Capital of Canada,” is now a centre for education and the health sciences. The Oshawa auto assembly plant reopened on November 10, 2021, when the first Chevy Silverado built in Canada was finished, after having been closed for roughly two years. GM spent C$1.3 billion retooling plants. Before the facility reopened, GM stated that it would still be used for testing autonomous vehicles as well as the manufacturing of vehicle stampings and other sub-assemblies.

In addition to the Lakeridge Health Education and Research Network (LHEARN), which is affiliated with Lakeridge Health Oshawa, formerly the Oshawa General Hospital, the city is home to three post-secondary educational institutions: Durham College, Trent University Durham, and Ontario Tech University, formerly the University of Ontario Institute of Technology. Advanced manufacturing, health technology, logistics, energy, and IT are important labour force sectors. According to StatsCan data from 2016, Oshawa was the sixth best place in Canada to find full-time employment.

The Government of Ontario’s Places to Grow initiative designates Downtown Oshawa as an Urban Growth Center. In the downtown area, more than 5,000 people are employed, and 2,400 university students attend classes there. The downtown serves as a significant hub for food (50+ restaurants and cafes), culture, and entertainment and sporting events (Regent Theatre and Tribute Communities Center) (The Robert McLaughlin Gallery and Canadian Automotive Museum). A Regional Innovation Center can be found in Oshawa, which also provides small businesses and entrepreneurs with start-up resources. There are co-working spaces in the downtown area as well.
