The Canadian province of Quebec has Quebec City as its capital city. The city’s population was 549,459 as of July 2021, and the surrounding metropolitan area had an estimated 839,311 residents. It is the seventh-largest metropolitan area and the eleventh-largest city in Canada. After Montreal, it is the second-largest city in the province. Its humid continental climate features hot summers and chilly, snowy winters.

Kébec, an Algonquian word that means “where the river narrows,” was the area’s original name given by the Algonquian people. One of the first European settlements in North America is Quebec City. Old Quebec’s (Vieux-Québec) ramparts are the only fortified city walls still standing in the Americas north of Mexico. The “Historic District of Old Québec” was the location that UNESCO designated as a World Heritage Site in 1985.

The Citadelle of Quebec, an intact fortress that serves as the focal point of the ramparts surrounding the old city and contains a secondary royal residence, is one of the city’s landmarks. The Château Frontenac hotel, which dominates the skyline, is another. The National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec, the Musée de la civilisation, and the National Assembly of Quebec are all in or close to the Vieux-Québec. The National Assembly of Quebec is the provincial legislature.

The majority of jobs in Quebec City are concentrated in the public sector, the military, services, business, transportation, and tourism. The city benefits from being a regional administrative and services hub as the province’s capital; appropriately, the provincial government is the biggest employer in the city, with 27,900 employees as of 2007.

Quebec City is well-known for its Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day celebrations, summer music festival, and Winter Carnival.
