Winnipeg is the largest city in Manitoba, Canada, which also serves as its capital. It is located close to the longitudinal centre of North America, at the confluence of the Red and Assiniboine rivers. Winnipeg was the eighth-largest metropolitan area in Canada as of 2021, with a city population of 749,607 and a metropolitan population of 834,678.

The city’s name, “Winiphk,” is derived from the Western Cree word for “muddy water” and is given to the nearby Lake Winnipeg.

With average highs in January of about 11 °C (12 °F) and average highs in July of about 26 °C (79 °F), the local climate is extremely seasonal even by Canadian standards due to its being so far inland.

Winnipeg is known as the “Gateway to the West” because it is a transportation and rail hub with a wide range of businesses. A few of the yearly celebrations held in this multicultural city include Folklorama, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, the Jazz Winnipeg Festival, the Festival du Voyageur, and the Winnipeg Fringe Theatre Festival.
